The SIU Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes SIU Carbondale alumni who have achieved success and recognition since their graduation. Former recipients include leaders in the business industry, famous actors, and world-class athletes. Pictures and biographies of the selected alumni are located on the first floor of the SIU Rec Center in the Alumni Lounge. We want to congratulate all alumni who have been recognized and thank the many others who bring prestige and recognition to SIU every day.

Robert Steele

Steele began a 58 year swimming coach career with the Carbondale Sharks youth group in 1959.  The Chicago south-sider swam for Saluki Coach Ralph Casey from '58-'61, winning more.

Marsha Ryan JD ’87 has been a general surgeon in Carbondale, Ill. since 1981. She obtained her M.D. from the University of Oklahoma in 1972. She was a faculty member in the SIU School of Medicine in its more.

Primo Angeli
’57, MFA ‘59
Primo Angeli was born in the small town of West Frankfort, Ill. to Italian immigrant parents, Anacleto and Candida Angeli. He and his brother, Dino, called their father "the music man," as one of his many more.
